A South Dakota Guide (American Guide Series); compiled by the Federal Writer's Project of the Works Progress Administration; Pierre, SD; 1938; First Edition; Octavo; Some fraying and edge wear. Overall Good or better. Lacks DJ.
During the heart of the depression, the federal government created the Works Progress Administration as a way to put people back to work. The Federal Writer's Project was one of the many initiatives. The goal was to use writers in each state to create a contemporary history and profile of the state. Over the years, these volumes, especially in first edition, have become quite scarce. Especially scarce is the SD volume represented here. $180.00; BHBT #26134

Ezra Kind's Mysterious Message; John M. Carroll; Real West Magazine; Dec., 1971; Boxed Set in Near Fine condition.
The mysterious message left by Ezra Kind may be the first documented presence of non-Indians in the Black Hills. The authenticity of the message has been debated for years. In 1971, John Carroll wrote an article about the continuing controversy for Real West Magazine. Carroll was a noted Custer historian and through his interest in Custer also wrote about the Black Hills and other areas touched by Custer. This item is a presentation set presented to Carroll by Real West Magazine. It includes a presentation box holding the issue with Carroll's article (which includes Carroll's mailing label on the magazine), and a slipcase that holds the box. Also included inside the box is Carroll's signed bookplate. A one-of-a-kind item. $175.00; BHBT #60391
